Dear Ben Hur,

I am sure you will be surprised to receive this letter from me.

I suppose inviting you to my wedding reception is the ideal moment to write to you. I feel free and liberated and can say all that I have wanted to tell you for a long time. Because I have been bound to you since I was a baby.

Almost like a Chinese girl whose feet are tied from birth, so that they are tiny and seductive for her husband. All their life, Chinese women hobble and live in pain, just for the love of one man.

That is exactly what happened to me. From the day our parents decided that we would make the ideal Jewish couple, my growingup years revolved around you.

I have happy memories of our childhood. Remember, how you taught me basketball, got me interested in cricket, and insisted on plaiting my hair? But once we grew up I felt you loathed me. Perhaps, you were looking for somebody who was smart and beautiful. I had become too familiar for you.

Now that my life has changed, I can say that you detested me because I was not beautiful like your Lolo from London.

When Uncle Ezra and Aunt Sigaut allowed your crazy group of five from fashion school to work in your room, everybody in Block A and B of Shalom India knew that you were in love with Lolo, although your mother insisted that her name was Lata Patel and that she was just a good friend. But nobody believed her. It was obvious and I knew by instinct that there was more to your Lolo than what met the eye.

I could tell, because I have known you since we were kids.

I had some doubts, but when I saw you sneaking hand in hand with Lolo into Juliet’s empty apartment for obvious reasons, I tore up the drawings of my wedding dress.

I had grown up dreaming of our wedding day.

After making innumerable sketches of wedding dresses, I had decided that I would wear a satin gown with lace trimmings embellished with sequins and pearls.

In those days, I was not bold like your Lolo, so although I would have liked to show my cleavage, I was shy about my big bust and did not have the courage to wear a dress with a low neckline, so all my drawings had high necklines.

I knew you were fond of smart clothes and I had even bought myself a magazine of western wedding dresses. I learned drawing from my best friend Anju, who was an art student.

When everybody went to bed, I would sit at the dining table and draw my wedding dress. Mother thought I was studying. I must have made about a hundred drawings, trying out different lengths, sleeves, collars, low necks, and high necks, but never satisfied, till I tore up all the sketches and decided I would wear a white sari with a veil, gloves, bangles, and heels. I came to the conclusion that I would be most comfortable in a sari.
